After six years, Nina Dobrev announced that she will be leaving The Vampire Diaries.

The CW network show, 'The Vampire Diaries' has been on air since 2009. It is one of CW’s biggest shows.

Nina Dobrev, played the main female character named Elena Gilbert. Elena is a teenage girl who is torn between two vampire brothers. She is a human and then later on becomes a vampire.

But she isn't the only one leaving the show. Alongside her is Michael Trevino who plays werewolf Tyler Lockwood.

The 26-year old actress wrote a message on her instagram to her followers about her departure.

"Dearest TVD Family, "I've just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries.I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn't just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime.

I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there's still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I'll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever.

There's more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you'll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert's life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her -- and to my work family -- as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend's pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for 'that Twilight TV show.' ;-) I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what's coming, you don't.

Love, Nina.

Nina has been posting updates since she announced her departure. She has posted pictures and videos with the cast and crew. She posted video of Trevino and her who both are leaving the show on her instagram.

She captioned her post , "That's a wrap on Elena and Tyler. We were just kids when we started the show, and we still are, 6 years later. #TVDFamily Love you Trevino."

She tells Hollywood Reporter in an interview that after six years its finally time "to graduate".

"I went to high school in real life, and then went to Degrassi high school, and then four years as Elena — 12 years is a long time to go to school. I need to graduate! I'm ready now. I'm ready to go into the real world. I've literally grown up on this show. I was a baby when I started, and now I'm a woman. I feel like I've learned so much and have grown so much because of every single person, and every single character, and person I've worked with. They made me who I am, and I'm excited to apply that to the next chapter."

Many shows have lost their favorite characters. But this show meant a lot to fans who have made the show to become what it is today. This may have come in shock to many loyal fans. After fans heard the news they took it to social media to talk about how the feel.

Fans were sad. But were happy for her because she was going to do what makes her happy.

"Saying goodbye to Nina is both bittersweet and beautiful." Julie Plec, executive producer of The Vampire Diaries wrote.

"Nina is excited to spread her wings, get some rest, travel the world and also take it by storm, and we support her a thousand-fold."We will miss Nina and the four hundred characters she played, but we look forward to the insane and exciting challenge of continuing to tell stories of out Salvatore Brothers and our much-loved and gifted ensemble.

The reason she is leaving the show is to take a break and pursue other projects. After the show ends, she is planning on going on her first cross-country road trip with a group of friends.
